THE SOCIAL EVENING/WINTER TRAINING PROGRAMME LAUNCH IS ON
WEDNESDAY WEEK - SEPTEMBER 30TH 7PM TO 8PM

New Members Welcome
The club’s winter training programme will be launched next Wednesday evening at Midleton Community Centre when we will host an Open Evening between 7pm and 8pm. It’s an opportunity for all current club members to come together and reflect on a busy season of running and also look ahead to what is in store.

The occasion will afford many of us the opportunity to meet in a ‘non training/non race’ set up. It will also give the chance for potential new members to come along and find out more about the events and happenings associated with Midleton AC. Please ensure to tell your friends, family members or work colleagues who may be interested in becoming involved with the club. Everybody will be welcome.

We will have full details of upcoming races, training times etc. Refreshments will also be served on the night and examples of the benifits of massage will be given by Neilus Aherne.

Training On Monday

In the meantime please note that our regular Monday training has already switched towards winter mode as sessions now take place at Midleton College All Weather surface. This facility is located just off the Dungourney Road as you travel past the end of Connolly Street. The time is as before - 6pm to 7pm.

Race Action

Race action is currently more orientated towards the longer distances, with the Cork Half Marathon behind us and Cork to Cobh ‘15’ miler ahead of us. Furthermore it now appears as if Midleton AC could have as many as 22 athletes wearing the club singlet when the 30th running of the Dublin City Marathon takes place on October 26th.

If you haven’t already entered and you intend participating please note that the closing date of October 5 is fast approaching. You can enter on line by logging on to the Dublin Marathon site. The Midleton AC committee may also still have hard copy application forms.

It’s pretty much the same advice regarding the Sports Supplies Cork to Cobh ‘15’ Mile race on Sunday week, October 4th. Advance entry helps the organisers considerably but it is also of great benefit to us all. The race HQ is at The Montenotte Hotel and it is likely to a very busy place on the morning of the event. So help yourself by logging on to the Cork BHAA web site and getting your entry form in the post to Kevin Cummins without delay.

The Cork to Cobh is a timely test of stamina for athletes and given favourable weather conditions it can be a very scenic and enjoyable run. The race begins at 9am and remember, there is a regular train service back to Kent Station afterwards. Current indications suggest that our club will have a very large entry on the day.

Half Marathon In Blarney

There is some thing about mentioning the words marathon and Cork in the same sentence that seems to roll the clouds way and bring out warm sunshine. Certainly conditions were quite sapping at last Sunday week’s Cork Half Marathon where another huge gathering of 550 took part. In total our club had 26 finishers with stories galore to be told afterwards and some outstanding personal best times being posted.

Noel O’Regan continues to make a major impression on the clock chalking up an eye catching 1:19:39 to bring him home 22nd in the race. Neilius Aherne continues to roll back the years – his 1:21:52 representing another outstanding performance which saw him take home the 2nd prize in the Over 50 category. It was also great to Sean ‘O Sullivan and Marc Dalton back in race mode and both had fine performances on the day. Michael Murphy and Vincent O’Neill could also be very pleased with their excellent outings. Our top lady was the ever progressive Breda Cahill who continued her Dublin countdown with a 1:42:38 finish, just ahead of training colleague Ann Marie Perry.

Good runs were also enjoyed ion the day by Shane Cooney, John Cashman,Kieran Murphy, Mark Walsh, Simon Thompson, Adrian Williams, Marie Murphy, Vincent Connolly, Christine Murphy, Margaret Rohan, Margaret Barry, Kevin Morrisson, Ann Savage, Deirdre Aherne, Mary Walsh, Linda Hegarty, Clare O’Leary, Danny McCarthy, Joan McCarthy and Mary Toher who was completing the course just 24 hours after competing in the full Dingle Marathon.

Marathon Adventures

Already a number of our other athletes have been in marathon action this autumn. Denis Kelleher followed up his venture in Longford by heading for the aforementioned Dingle event where he posted 4:13:56 to complete a very satisfying few weeks. Undaunted by the thought of more Denis headed to Kilkenny (that footballing strong hold) just last Sunday where the marble city hosted a Half Marathon. Here the Midleton club man clocked

At the same time in warmer temperatures both Fergal O’Meara and Tom Cody were familiarising themselves with German hospitality as they took part in the Berlin Marathon. Well done to the lads who had to deal with really warm conditions as they covered the 26.2 miles. Tom came home in just over 3 and a half hours whilst Fergal crossed the line just inside the 4 hour mark (chip times)

Mini Marathon

It’s ladies day on Sunday next as the Evening Echo Mini Marathon takes place. A very large contingent of our club runners is set to participate and we extend every good wish to each of them. A special race office is open until Thursday at Debenhams in the city centre to deal with all enquiries and entries.

Wedding Bells

- A quick word from the social pages to congratulate two of our members who both were in the spotlight last week. In county Carlow Rachael Meally tied the knot whilst nearer to home in Dungourney Maura O’Doherty was also walking up the aisle. We extend every good wish to both Rachael and Maura and their respective husbands.

Final Reminder

We leave you with a final reminder to keep Wednesday next September 30th in the diary.

In the meantime - “Keep on running” !
