-----Midleton’s Juvenile Athletes Keep On Winning

Athletics – John Cashman -

EVENING ECHO - SAT JULY 3RD

Winning is a very good habit and these days Midleton AC seem to have it in abundance. With the adult wing of the club boasting it’s biggest ever membership success is arriving on a weekly basis and there just seems to be no stopping the talented group of under age athletes that are coming through the ranks.

The most recent notable feats were recorded at the Under 12-Under 19 Munster Track & Field Championships which saw the club proudly return with 9 medals.

On the track Daniel Colbert was the undoubted star performer winning gold, silver and bronze medals in the Under 17 age bracket. It was very much case of hard work paying dividends for Daniel who missed most of last season through injury but battled back to peak form following a strenuous training programme. A gold medal in the 100 meters hurdles where a time of 14:88 was clocked represents a fabulous performance for a young man that looks to have a bright future in the sport.

Daniel went on to perform with great distinction in the flat, capturing a silver medal in the 100 meter final (recording 12:03) and subsequently earning a bronze medal for his 23:68 time in the 200 meters final.

The name of Eoin Casey is another which is grabbing the limelight in local athletics circles. A third placed finish recording 4:13:95 in a highly competitive 1,500 meters finals indicates further the potential of this very promising young runner.
Inside in the field events Midleton AC representatives performed with great distinction, many returning home with symbols of their success.

Al round sports star Seadnaidh Smyth who is also noted for his GAA and soccer talents scooped 2 medals./ Gold came in the javelin where he produced a wonderful last throw of 32.04 meters to win, whilst a throw of 11.06 secured the silver medal in the shot putt.
Under 15 starlet Aidean Hallahan, who is All Ireland throwing champion, topped thel eader board in the shot putt securing gold with a throw of 10.05 meters. She also displayed her qualities with a fourth placed finish in the discus.

There was cause for double celebration in the Hallahan household when Aidean’s brother Diarmuid threw the discus 33.03 meters thereby ensuring the silver medal and then promptly followed up with a bronze winning performance in the hammer. Proving his all round talent for the field events, Dairmuid finished fourth in the discus competition.

Meantime one of Midleton’s outstanding Under 12 performers secured a silver medal in the shot putt. Cleeva Motherway added to her growing reputation with a throw of 8.29 meters. Caolan O’Brien was equally impressive when winning the silver at Under 13 level thanks to a throw of 9.37 meters.

Elsewhere under 12 600 meters runner Tara O’Keeffe clocked up a coveted personal best of 1:53:09 to come home fourth in the final, where she was followed by club mate Jessica Strain. Amongst the others to catch the eye in the Midleton singlet on finals day were Andrew Ryan in the Under 12 sprint, Dara Thompson and Liam Stack in the Under 12 600 meters final and Caoilinn Hickey who ran very consistently in both the Under 14 800 and 1,500 meters races.

In the Under 12 boys relay Liam Stack, Dara Thompson, Andrew Rayn, Joshua Allen and Jack Northridge showed great from to qualify for the National Relay Championships which will be held in Tullamore at the end of this month.

Meantime Midleton’s individual athletes will be hoping to bring more medals when they meet the best athletes in the land at the National Championships which will also be held in Tullamore over the next two weekends.
