KILNABOY 10 ++++++++All The

Action Reviewed
There has been non stop action on the roads over the past few months and as usual our crew have been out in large numbers in al corners of the county and further afield. From Ballinhassig to the Beautiful Burren the Midleton singlet has been to the fore and we commend all our athletes on their performances, in particular those who recorded personal best times over the past few weeks. As always the victory podium is a special place to be and it is a feeling that many Midleton runners have enjoyed on a regular basis.
UCC 10K
That man with many Over 55 prizes on his mantle piece, Neilus Aherne collected again when the symbols of success were being handed out at the UCC 10k race earlier this month. With a record breaking entry of over 500, Neilus proved tops again in his category just holding off the challenge of in-form Eagle AC man Joe Murphy. There were also a number of other very encouraging Midleton performers in this race including our top finisher Darragh Canavan (28th overall in a splendid 36:46) Kieran Mulcahy, Tom Cody Mark Walshe and Vincent O’Neill.
Easter Weekend
Easter Weekend brought action aplenty both in Cork and in neighbouring counties with new standards being set by a number of our representatives.
Killarney 5 Mile
A big word of congrats to Denis Kelleher who achieved his aim of breaking the magical 30 minute barrier for the 5 mile distance in this Good Friday race. It was truly a superb run by Denis who crossed the line with 3 seconds to spare and in process also won the 3rd Over 45 prize a she finished in 20th place overall.
Kilnaboy ‘10’
The Munster ‘10’ Mile Series concluded in Kilnaboy on Easter Sunday and here Helen Gilroy was the Midleton headline maker, coming home second in the ladies Over 45 category. Mark Walshe led our contingent home with another fine performance, followed soon after by John Carey who chalked up a superb personal best time for the classic distance. Margaret Jones posted an excellent run, just missing out on the prizes, whilst Sheila Buckley, Collette Barry, Danny McCarthy, Elaine O’Riordan, Mary B.Walshe, Joan McCarthy and Marion Cotter also had good outings.
Boherbue to Kiskeam
The words ‘Boherbue to Kiskeam’ have gone hand in hand with Easter Monday for the past 22 years and this year was no exception as the popular 4 mile event attracted competitors from a number of counties. As per previous years, the journey home was a happy one for Midleton AC, with prizes galore to fill the car. In difficult weather conditions Denis Kelleher (11th overall) continued his rich vein of form by winning the Over 45 category. It completes a remarkable ten days for Denis who apart from chalking up that personal best in Killarney all enjoyed a great run in the Connemara Half Marathon on the previous weekend.
Tom Cody a regular visitor to the North Cork race over the years continued his fine record by winning the second over 55 prize, whilst fresh from his exploits in Kilnaboy 24 hours earlier Danny McCarthy was also on the category honours list. Margaret Twohig ran an excellent race to claim the 2nd Over 45 ladies prize whilst Joan McCarthy was unlucky just to miss out on the category prizes.

Midleton AC 5 Mile Race Just 2 Weeks Away

As you can see from the selected fixture list at the end of this column, there is no shortage of races over a variety of distances during the next few months.
Our own race, the Joe Hourigan Memorial Midleton AC 5 Miler on Thursday May 3rd should now take centre stage for everybody involved in our club. Please spread the word and encourage your friends, family, colleagues etc to either take part or lend a helping hand with stewarding or catering. Edmond O'Sullivan is the man to contact in advance if you know somebody who can assist with stewarding on the big night,. Numbers have grown steadily in recent years and despite rather unsettled weather conditions (remember the down pour just before the start) over 400 took part last year. Everybody has a role to play in assisting the organising committee both before hand and on the night. Race HQ is again the Midleton GAA Pavilion where entries will be taken from 6pm onwards. Entry fee is 10 per athlete with 2 euro from each entry fee donated to the locally based Let's Get Together Suicide Charity. Please note there is also a concession of 5 euro for unwaged.
So ‘come on’, get involved in your club's biggest night of the year and lets all our play our part in making it another memorable sporting and social occasion. Contact John Cashman or any club officer fro more information.

New Training Arrangements

The summer season is fast approaching and thus a change is also on the way with regard to training. Monday training will revert to Midleton CBS Field from next Monday April 16th at the new time of 6.30pm to 7.30pm. The regular Wednesday 7pm training is now taking the form of a Tuesday outdoor run from the Community Centre.
Also please note we are NOT taking any beginners (ie people just starting running) until October due to safety reasons as we will be outdoors until then.
Of course anyone who wishes to join and CAN RUN at least 4-5 miles before then is VERY welcome. So please do not invite beginners along as refusal may offend them (and you) and most likely discourage them from joining in the future.

Training On CIT Track

The club has hired the CIT track in Bishopstown for a regular weekly training session each Saturday MORNING between 7.30am and is available up until 9.15am. at a cost of 2 euro per session. Please call Kevin Smith 087-9716372 for more information.

Mobile Phones – Personal Note
Whilst possibly all of you have one, a few of us prefer not to use them. I’m one of the rare variety. Now in the case of the Ballintotis Race and possibly in the case of the Midleton race I may be handed one in the days before hand, the truth is I have never liked using them. Hence I do not have one – but as result my wife Siobhan has seen her phone become very popular as a means of incoming calls. I just wanted to clarify that I do not have a mobile home – please drop a note on e mail if you wish to contact me. John
