Club News 18-2-2013

Magic Jones

Magic is the only word I can use to describe the run today by club member Margaret Jones who today made history and completed her first back to back marathon in Clonakilty in just over four hours. Despite her sore and very badly blistered feet she headed out this morning accompanied by the great Helen Gilroy who did the first 13 miles with her and then Sheila Buckley took over for the last thirteen. Making the rest of us look like whimps, Margaret had a superb run smiling as always through the pain as she finished either second or third lady overall ( a few only did one marathon so we await the official results).Amazingly she was flying the last few miles and as always did her club proud. In what were far from ideal conditions of cold and wind she let nothing deter her.

What a lady.

Margaret was running to raise funds for her young buddy Jonathan who is very seriously ill so anyone that still wants to sponsor her can still do so.

Pat Walsh ran the full marathon with Margaret on Saturday as he finished his last few hours in his 40’s as Pat turned 50th today. Happy Birthday Pat, Well done on sat new marathon PB for a young lad.

Midleton 5 Race Wins Best Race of 2012

A race poll held on the Cork Running Blog has voted our 5mile race as the best 5 mile of 2012. Plenty of club members help out each year to maintain our record of having a fantastic spread of food and friendly atmosphere. Our very fair challenging course presents runners with a great opportunity to record a pb going into the Ballycotton summer series. Thanks to all who voted.

Well done to all who help make this race a success, we hope to have the same level of standards for the up and coming race on the 2nd of May.

Ballycotton 10

With only 2 weeks to go before the much anticipated Ballycotton 10 race, we will do up a preview of the race next week with all the information about how to get to and from the venue. Over 100 members registered to compete, it could be our biggest turn out for this flagship race.

Mealagh 10 Mile

3 of our members braved the tough hilly course in West Cork to take on the challenging Mealagh 10 mile course. Sean O Sullivan was our 1st man over the line to finish in an impressive 11th place overall to continue his rise back to form to win the 0/40 category. Sheila Buckley was our 1st lady home to finish 4th lady overall on what is a very challenging course.

Paul Kieran’s was our final member of the trio to have a good run leading up to the Ballycotton 10 in 2 weeks time.

Janssen 4 mile:

Darragh Canavan knocked 15 seconds off the time he set in the FMC race which was held in the same course 3 weeks earlier to be our 1st man home again. Next up was John Hennessy followed closely by team mate Mike Dolphin who were both part of the Janssen team which won the B Category. Nigel Carroll was our next man in with an impressive 23:21, Adam Duchnicz was next and 3rd member of the MD Insulation team including Darragh Canavan to come 3rd in A category. Kieran Mulchay was next just under the 24 mins to continue his good work this season. Francis Maunsell was next man home just over the 24 min mark.

Michelle Kenny was our 1st lady home again to knock 22 seconds off her time from 3 weeks ago to come in 3rd overall and be 1st in the Dept of Education team in grade A category.

Rod Scanlon was next home as he continues his good form going into his 1st Ballycotton in 2 weeks. London marathon bound Fergal O Meara produced a pb as his preparation for London looks like it is paying off. Stanislaw Bycek was the 1st man over 50 as he continues to rack up the prizes in each event.

Sally Drennan was 1st O/45 and 2nd in the Dept of Education team which won the grade A category. Helen Gilroy wan 2nd O/45 pretty impressive considering she was ill for a few days leading up to the race. Margaret Jones warmed up for her back to back marathon’s with this race to be 2nd O/40 and part of the Midleton News team which were 2nd in the A category.

Other prize winners on the day were Joan McCarthy who was 1st O/55 followed by Kathleen O Connell who was 2nd 0/55.

Plenty of other members ran including some of the development group who seem to be progressing nicely under Vince and Danny’s guidance.

LETTER PACKING BALLYCOTTON 10

A huge thank you to the large number of our members who came out last week to help with the packing of the envelopes .Your help was really appreciated. We achieved a record in getting finished so early and hopefully you all will get record times in Ballycotton as a reward.

Thanks again

Carragaline 5 Mile

Anna Doris was 3rd overall in the Eagle 5 mile race today, as she continue’s her good form coming into Ballycotton in 2 weeks.UPDATE
News just in gives Anna a time of 31.19 giving her 3rd Place but exactly the same time as 2nd Placed Lady. This is Anna's 2nd PB for the 5 mile this year. Looks like it could be "the  Year Of The Doris".
also just in has John O'Halloran 2nd Male O/60 and Margaret Barry 1st O/60 Lady. Well done lads I hope ye got prizes for this.

Great to see Noel O Regan back in the prizes again as he won 3rd 0/45 as he comes back to some form.

I’ll do up a full report on this during the week for the others that ran.

Killarney 5k
