Boherbue -Kiskeam 4 Mile
Ladies in the Prizes Again

Today Monday 1st April saw the annual Boherbue to Kiskeam take place over a very windy and cold course. There was a much larger than usual crowd taking part with some of the fastest runners in the county taking part. The race was won by Marc Hanrahan in 18.38 with James Mc Carthy 2 nd in 19.24 and to make it a double Laura Crowe was first lady in 21.41.
Our Midleton Ac ladies were in the winning positions again with Anne Marie Perry really getting back on form taking 1st O/40 followed by Joan McCarthy 1st O/55 and a lady who is really coming back to form Margaret Barry 1st O/60.
Margaret Twohig ran a great race and narrowly missed out on the prizes. Marie Gillman of the Dev. Group ran a superb race coming in just over the thirty two min mark.
Our first man home (as he says himself the only man) was the great Tom Cody taking 2nd O/55.
There was a total of 134 runners took part in a very well organised event with some of the best prizes of any race around on offer and a great spread after made the journey well worth while.
Please let me know if anyone took part in any other races over the weekend e mail
Midleton AC Ladies Win Again
Ballybunion Half Marathon & 10Km.

Midleton AC Ladies went to Kerry this weekend and on what was described as a horrendous course with hills galore and very strong winds Sheila Buckley came home 1st Lady in a time of just over 91mins and not being content with winning her catogery as per usual
Helen Gilroy came home 2nd Lady overall in a time of 96 mins. Super results ladies.Catherine Terry ably assisted by the ever solid Pat Walsh
came home 4th Lady.

Bernie Twomey who is in training for Rotterdam Marathon came home very comfortable in a time of 1.52 approx. and won 2nd O/40 for her effort There was a 10Km there also in which Frances Maunsell appears to be our sole runner here came home 7th overall and also won 2nd O/40.
Looks like it was well worth the journey lads.

First & Second for Midleton

Tonight Friday in the Marina 5Km Michelle Kenny got her first hat trick by getting her third win in a row in a time of 19.21 she was followed home by new member Karen Grant 2nd in a time of 19.43. Other ladies who took prizes were Margaret Twohig running a great race to take 1st O/45 and Joan Mc Carthy 1st O/55 . Susan Delaney continues to improve with each run and will soon be back to full form.

In the mens race which was won by Alan O'Shea our first man home in what looks like under nineteen mins was Paul Spiteri closely followed by new member David Motherway. James Moore and Shane Gannon had excellent runs as had Simon Fitzgerald and Marc Walsh who it was great to see back running injury free.

There was a total of 255 runners took part and great praise must go to the organisers who had plenty of stewards out and had a fine spread after.Kevin Cummins from BHAA who helped with the organising said a new record was made in that all the prize winners were present to collect their prizes. There was also a huge amount of spots on offer. Apologies if I missed anyone but it was quite dark at the end and again please let me know if you are doing any races and want them mentioned  E mail

So please lets us know what you want  mentioned on the blog.  any photos etc and we will do our best to put it on.     e mail

It has been mentioned that the ladies achivements get more highlighted than the male members that is in NO WAY intentional but the ladies are in the prizes more. So come on Guys start winning some more and we will be delighted to highlight that too.In the meantime we try and mention everyone's effort. Anyone wishing to take on the PRO job or assist with it are very welcome.

Day 2 St Patrick's Day
Ballinhassig 4 Mile

On what was a beautiful morning for running the Ballinhassig 4 Mile took place over a tough course. Michelle Kenny continued in her winning ways coming an easy First Lady in 25.19 with no one challenging her for her well deserved first place.
Other ladies who took prizes were Martha Mc Namara 3rd O/50 and Joan Mc Carthy 3rd O/55 well done ladies.
We had only one male in the prizewinner with Stanislaw Byczek 1st O/50. The prizes were presented by Pat Buckley Chairman Cork County Board A.A.I.. Others who had good runs were Susan Delaney,Kathleen O'Connell and Mary Toher also Paul Spitiri, Paul Kearns,Ned Ramsell,Alan Kelleher and Donie O'Connell. Michael McNamara who despite having done a long run yesterday with the Dev Group had an excellent run today also. The was as always very well organised with a fine spread afterwards and lots of Spot Prizes

Francis Maunsell had a great run in Tralee International Half Marathon with a new PB by over 3 mins in a time of 1:26:01, coming 14th overall. Francis who did 73 in Dungarvan last year brought his 10 mile time down to 63 this year for Dungarvan and Ballycotton must currently rank as one of the the most improved runner in the club and with today times showing how he continues to improve. Super running Francis well done!

Good luck to everyone doing the Mallow 10 tomorrow.

Day 1

Well done to Marian Cronin who today completed her first Half Marathon in Tralee. Over a very tough and hard course Marian did 2.05.48. Her first 10 Miler was Ballycotton less than two weeks ago and today a half marathon. Marian shows how she earned her well deserves awards of Best Beginner" at last years awards.I dont know if we had any other runners there today.

Please note there will be no training next Monday as it is a Bank Holiday

Thursday, 14 March 2013

This weekend sees several races on the calendar with Tralee International Marathon and Half Marathon, Mallow 10 and Ballinhassig 4 Mile all on the agenda. Both Tralee and Mallow are pre entry so unless you have entered you will not be able to enter now and don’t even consider getting someone else’s number.

That leaves us with Ballinhassig 4 Mile on St Patricks Day @11 am (plenty of time to get to the parade after). This is really an excellent race very well organised with a fantastic array of prizes with three prizes in each category and the biggest amount of spot prizes that are at any race around. The food after is also excellent. The course is challenging but not bad by any means you will have about a mile and a half on the main Bandon- Cork road and then a steep downhill to finish in Ballinhassig village. RACE TIP Be well warmed up for the start as the start is about 800 Mtrs uphill and its very easy get burned out by starting too fast and not being properly warmed up after that its downhill for about a mile and a half. A race well worth supporting and for a great cause.

If you want to be included in the race reports please inform us of how you do etc (by txt 0861931338 or e mail and please don’t be embarrassed to let us know when you do a PB etc Its not just the so called fast people get PBs and even they have to tell us when they do as its impossible to know everyone’s times etc. also if you run in races you think we may not be aware of. We will only accept reports from club members and not third parties. Also if you have any photos please e mail them also.

Dates To Note

We move to Midleton CBS Field (grass) on April 8th at 6.30 (note change of start time).

We move outdoors for the Wed. night training on 27th March so next Wed is our last night indoors.

UCC 10 Km 7th April

Kilnaboy 10 Mile 14th April

Ballintotis 4 Mile 18th April

Glanmire 5Km 22nd April (new)

Midleton 5 Mile 2nd May

The Development Squad will meet as usual next Sat. @10am in Bailick Car Park. We could do with another helper with this group (especially a female helper) Please send an e mail , txt or call if you are willing to help.
Lots of members are now out running the Midleton 5 Course (I have it freshly marked) but please as you approach the 2 Mile mark cross the road to the left hand side until you are around the bend. I saw a runners (wearing headphones and not a club member) being nearly killed there two weeks ago when two cars came flying around the bend. Cars cannot see you and if you are moving at any speed you will not see them either. You might lose a few seconds but safety first please.

Munster Masters Road Racing Championships

We are looking for members O/35 and 0/45 to take part anyone interested please contact Sally Drennan 0872265857 or Noel O’Regan 0861704072 as soon as possible. We want as many as possible to enter and its not just the fast people teams need to be make up so everyone is welcome.

A Tale Of Two Mugs

(or The Mug You Could Not Wash)

In 1983 I ran my first Ballycotton 10 and funnily I don’t remember too much about it except the mug we received. I983 was the beginning of what is now referred to as the First Running Boom and lots of people were starting to take up running so there was a large crowd from my workplace taking part in the race. The morning after I arrived into work to be greeted by “How’s your mug ?” I replied “My mug is fine “ only to discover that most people’s mugs were now blank and had no Ballycotton crest. I had been so proud of mine that I immediately placed it on the mantle piece at home and did not touch it. Most others had tea/coffee in theirs and had then to wash them. As the mugs had not been fired properly by the potters the crest washed off. So my mug has never been washed since 1983 and shall remain unwashed. I wonder how many miles I have clocked up between then and now .I don’t know if anyone else has an intact 1983 mug even the great John Walsh the main organiser of the race does not have one.

There will be club cars where you can leave your gear etc on the cliff near the Pitch n Putt Course where we meet from 12 noon onwards. We can warm up etc there also get club photos etc The cars are very kindly provided every year by Kathleen and Donie O'Connell and will be watched during the race.

Be sure to bring some old clothing that you can wear to the start and then throw away in case the day is very cold.

Dont forget to bring a few bob as there will be Ballycotton 10
T- shirts, hoodies, hats etc. on sale there also John Buckley will have his shop/stalls there with special Ballycotton discounts on many items.

Do NOT under any circumstances wear someone else's number or give your number to anyone else please.
Ballycotton 10 operate a NAME &SHAME POLICY for anyone found doing this and we do not want our great club named and shamed.

Dont forget we have a Post Race dinner in East Cork Golf Club for only 10 Euro and there are a few places left also anyone that has already made their own plans are very welcome to join us there at any stage for the post race analysis.

Finally the very best of luck to everyone in the race Especially to those doing it for the very first time also those looking for PBs and also to those like myself just hoping to get around injury free.
