Bay Half Marathon

Some fine running today Sunday in the Bay Half Marathon from the Cloyne Ladies Shirley O'Gorman 2.22.21 and Louise O'Regan 2.22.42. Great running ladies in what must have been very hard conditions.

Ultra Report from Andre Brodkorb

What a day. I run my first Ultra today Saturday, 50km, by accident. Weather was nothing short of horrendous, ground conditions were ferocious, worse than any cross country, and the hills, 1200m climb ... I was in 4th or 5th position at mile 14 when I missed a turn and run an extra mile or so. Battled back. At my mile 25 came another cruel endless hill and together with two others we missed another turn, combined with a slightly longer course made 50km ... After 4:35min I nearly cracked and I was never as exhausted in my entire life ... I am better now but still pumping adrenaline (4am...) say no more

What an amazing achievement Andre you are admired and respected by all in the club. Danny

Visit to Clondrohid 200m track by Andre Brodkorb

I am tapering i.e. twiddling my thumbs, so I have some time to summarise our visit to the tiny village of Clondrohid athletic track (http://www.clondrohidastro.com/about ). This is meant to be food for thought. Midleton AC spends a considerable amount of money renting tracks etc. every year, and at this stage there is nothing we can do about this. However, there may be opportunities to build a home for Midleton AC, both juvenile and adults,  in the medium to long term, the need is there but we need the will do tackle this project. With currently 300-400 adults and parents associated with the club, the timing would be good.

Everything below  is written in bullet points so can be read easily.

·         Community Centre and GAA club have long term lease of grounds; they were trying to apply for EU money but quickly realised that as a GAA club they will not get any money

·         Established a leader group and set up a limited company with 7 directors (Clondrohid Community Recreational Facility Ltd.)

·         Seed capital was necessary for any grant application: Community loan of 70 families รก €1,000 for 5 years i.e. to pay back €200 Euro back per year

·         Applied for Leader Funding to build Astropitches to the West Cork Development Partnership Ltd:

€150,000 Leader funding

€70,000 seed capital

€70,000 loan from GAA club for land

·         Lease for 6 years minimum; after that the Astro turf goes back to the GAA, hence they do not have to pay back loan to the GAA

Some of this leasing and over and back to the GAA went over my head but some of you with accounting skills may understand this better – they were very open about this and if anybody wants more information, they would be willing to provide it

·         Astroturf courts made nearly €50,000 in the first year, income now levelled off at €40-45,000 per annum

·         With the money left (!!!) the leased (long-term) some neighbouring land from a local farmer, applied for another grant:

€46,000 Village enhancement grant

€150,000 for track from seed capital and income of Astropitch

Other money – I missed that one

·         A 4-lane 200m track with a 6 lane 100m track, see pictures, was build, which is somewhat bigger than we thought it would be and the bends were not very steep

·         The Village enhancement grant required a walkway around the track, open to the public, proper metal fencing around it was necessary for securing the track from vandalism (e.g. boy racers!)

·         Some gym machines for the community were put up

·         Track is used by local schools, mothers waiting for kids, locals in general and lately also a local athletic club. Use is not charged though a voluntary €2 at the entrance

·         The total cost of the 200m track was €280,000; I have the detailed line-by-line invoice; I can send it to anyone interested

·         Maintenance: leader program (this time for fishermen ?!?), lately 2x 19h rural work scheme

Lucky opportunities:

·         Everything was built during the crash so prices for buildings were rock-bottom

·         Floodlighting: Airtricity had recently installed wind generators and were either required by law or company policy to invest into local community projects – yes, floodlights for astropitch and track

·         Following the successful development of both astropitch and track and witnessing the positive effect on the community, many families did not asked for loan repayments (seed capital)

Best of luck to everyone running this weekend in the various events. We have Andre Brodkorb in the Ballyhoura Marathon. We wish him the very best. This is a particularly hard one where some of the best trail/mountain runners take part.

Clonpriest 5Km

There was a mighty crowd in Clonpriest for this event and everyone seemed to have good runs. The conditions were ideal for running and its is a fast flat course so lots of good times were had. Vicki Cleary had another good run and got herself a PB as did Eileen Leahy, Rayleen Dolphin and Gillian Bransfield.(others please let me know). We were also in the prize winners with Anna Doris coming 6th overall lady. Esther Murphy took 2nd O/40 and Marian Aherne 2nd O/45. Our men also had fine runs with John Cashman and Mike Cremin just falling short of smashing the nineteen minute barrier. Another man with a great run and who knocked a minute off his PB was Paul Fleming.
As always the spread after was fantastic and the whole organisation was superb the only downer was the start was almost fifteen minutes late which meant that people who had warmed up etc. were left standing around to get cold again.
